Academic Scholars / Valedictorians & Salutatorians / Other Academic Awards of Note

Valedictorian and Salutatorian – Graduating seniors with a weighted GPA of 5.00 and above will be designated as valedictorians. Students with a weighted GPA of 4.80-4.99 will be designated at salutatorians. For details about valedictorian and salutatorian honors, please see Board Policy 5032.
The Academic Scholars recognition program through the Oklahoma State Department of Education recognizes graduating seniors who meet all of the requirements listed below. Oklahoma Academic Scholars receive a certificate of recognition from the State Board of Education and the local high school, a gold seal affixed to their diploma, and the honor recorded on their official transcript.
- Accumulate over Grades 9, 10, 11, and the first semester of Grade 12, a minimum grade point average of 3.7 on a four-point scale or be in the top 10% of their graduating class.
- Complete (or will complete) state and local requirements for a standard diploma
- Achieve a composite score of 27 on the ACT or 1220 combined score on the SAT. The ACT or SAT must have been taken on a national test date before the date of graduation.
The Academic Scholars scholarship program (separate from the recognition program described above), established by the state Legislature and governor in 1988 and operated by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education, provides scholarships to academically outstanding students who attend an Oklahoma college or university. Academic Scholars receive a scholarship to help cover the cost of room, board, tuition, books and incidental fees for up to eight semesters. - achieving designation as a National Merit Scholar, National Merit Finalist or United States Presidential Scholar or by scoring at or above the 99.5 percentile on the ACT or SAT
- receiving an institutional nomination from an OK public college or university
National Merit Scholars

Each year the district has an impressive number of National Merit Scholars. National Merit Semifinalists are selected in September based on their performance on the PSAT/NMSQT--a test that measures verbal, math and writing skills. National Merit Finalists are announced in February, based upon students who meet additional academic requirements. Merit Scholars are selected from the group of Finalists, based on their abilities, skills, and accomplishments.
Merit scholarship awards include the National Merit $2,500 scholarship, as well as corporate and college-sponsored scholarships.
Students wishing to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship Program must sign up to take the PSAT/NMSQT during their 11th grade year. PSAT/NMSQT preparation camps take place during the summer before junior year for interested students.

Volunteerism and Community Service
Union students are highly active in service to their community. Volunteer hours for Community Service/Distinguished Graduate awards, as well as National Honor Society and Key Club are recorded, verified, approved, and tracked through an online platform called MobileServe. All students grades 9-12 have MobileServe accounts created for them using their school email. Community Service Recognition

To receive the Community Service recognition at graduation, students must complete and log 200 service hours in grades 9-12 by December 31st of their 12th grade year. A minimum of 40 hours must be “school hours,” which are hours in service to the Union district and/or individual schools outside of normal school hours. This may include (but is not limited to) school events, family nights, field days, schedule pick up, etc. School hours can also be earned through service as a part of a Union club or team. Distinguished Graduate Recognition

To recognize outstanding academic achievement and service to school and community, Union Public Schools has a “Distinguished Graduate” recognition for graduating seniors. Students meeting the 100 minimum community service hour requirement for this honor will be notified by the College and Career Center during the spring of their senior year and given the Distinguished Graduate form to complete and submit along with an unofficial seven semester transcript. In addition to the community service hour requirement, students must meet rigorous academic qualifications and course requirements. Mr. and Miss Union
- Mr. and Miss Union Honorees
One of the highest honors a senior may receive comes during second semester of the 12th grade year when Mr. and Miss Union are selected. This honor is bestowed on a boy and girl who have excelled in academics, community service, and other aspects of student life.
In the selection process, all students and faculty are given the opportunity to nominate senior candidates, including self-nominations. The top-10 male and female senior nominees are placed on a ballot for a student vote, reviewed for academic performance, and evaluated by faculty for school spirit, positive leadership, character/integrity, and contribution to class. The final selection is determined by 30 percent grade point average (GPA), 30 percent teacher recommendation score and 40 percent student vote.
During the spring semester ceremony, the top five male and female nominees are honored along with their families. One male and female candidate are selected for the title of Mr. and Miss Union.
Seniors of the Month
- List of Seniors of the Month
Seniors of the Month are selected based on monthly faculty nominations and voting. Students are nominated and selected based on leadership, citizenship, scholarship, and school involvement. Each month, one male and female senior student is honored. During the spring semester, all seniors vote on the existing Seniors of the Month to choose one male and one female student to be honored as Seniors of the Year.
