Union elementary students with the help from cadets with the Union Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps paid tribute to victims of 9-11 with a coordinated flag-raising at several elementary sites today to mark the solemn remembrance.

Cadets Felix Allen and Kamati Wachoche, both students at Union High School, spent several minutes with members of the safety patrol at Rosa Parks Elementary this morning, talking about flag etiquette, how to hold and fold the flag as elementary students took turns folding the American flag. (Wachoche is a former Rosa Parks student.)

Similar tributes were planned at other elementary sites, including Jefferson and Darnaby Elementary School.

At Rosa Parks, fifth graders Alexia Rodigruz and Christine Nguyen normally share the duty of raising the flag each morning as school starts. The girl and students took turns learning how to properly fold the flag before the formal flag raising. Today, the cadets raised the flags at 8:46 a.m., marking the time when the first airplane crashed into one of the World Trade Center towers on September 11, 2001.

The safety patrol, under the direction of sponsors Lisa Dill, a behavior tech, and art teacher Teresa Mullowney, joined the cadets in saluting the flag, which was raised to half mast.

"9/11 Day" – sometimes referred to as Patriot Day - refers to the September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance, a day dedicated to remembering the victims of the 2001 terrorist attacks by performing acts of service, community projects, and volunteering. The official 9/11 Day organization provides free educational resources for classrooms and encourages individuals, families, and organizations to "remember the good" by doing good deeds.  For more information, visit https://911day.org/

In honor of September 11th, Boevers Elementary 4th Grade Flag Patrol joined Union High School JROTC cadets in a ceremonial raising of the American flag.

Cadets Chang and Martinez from Union High School Air Force Junior ROTC, came to Clark to show some of our Safety Patrol students etiquette for folding the United States Flag. We also ceremoniously raised the flag to half-staff and had a moment of silence at 8:46am to remember September 11. We will never forget those who courageously gave, those who tragically lost, and the power of coming together in unity.
