Board Adopts New Policies for Prayer, Minute of Silence

The Board of Education adopted two new policies for voluntary prayer and a minute of silence.

While Union Public Schools already observe both practices, the policies were enacted as a requirement for accreditation by the Oklahoma State Board of Education.

Board Policy 5027 will “ensure compliance with the directive mandating that all school districts permit students and teachers who wish to do so to engage in voluntary prayer.”

Associate Superintendent Sandi Calvin said the policy provides that students and teachers may participate in voluntary prayer, including at district athletic events and graduation ceremonies. However, it also maintains that school district employees are not permitted to teach or reinforce any sectarian or religious doctrine. Additionally, the policy establishes a reporting procedure for any student or teacher who feels they have not been allowed to participate in voluntary prayer, ensuring that these reports will be thoroughly investigated.

Board Policy 5026 sets the guidelines for a ‘minute of silence.’

Calvin said Board Policy 5026 “ensures that each school designates one minute for silent reflection, meditation, prayer, or other quiet activities. Teachers will provide neutral guidance, allowing students the freedom to choose how they use this time, provided it doesn’t interfere with others.”  This policy fosters respect for diverse beliefs while complying with state law.

In other action, the Board accepted a bid for a variable air volume unit replacement at the Freshman Academy to Shoemaker Mechanical for $466,391. The units are used primarily in the office and smaller spaces to regulate the air conditioning. The existing units need to be replaced due to their age and lack of serviceability. Many do not operate because replacement parts are no longer available.

The Board also approved a payment of $245,796 to Tulsa County Assessor’s Office for annual inspection fees.
