Board Approves Storm Water, Sewer Line Work at High School
Board members approved awarding a contract to Magnum Construction to fix storm water drainage and sewer lines at the High School, to cost $361,400.
This project will provide for a sewage lift station and force main for the sewage effluent at the east stadium complex, explained Fred Isaacs, director of construction for Union Public Schools. “The existing line was the original sewage line when the stadium complex was constructed and has collapsed,” Isaacs stated. “It is very deep and traverses across the north end of the football field under the turf. Wallace Engineering recommended a new sewer alignment that does not require encroachment on the field. The new line will be a pressurized force main from the pump station and will be much shallower traversing under the south side walk of the band building.”
In a separate project, Board members approved a bid from COP Hometown Service for an HVAC system renovation at Andersen Elementary to cost $175,590. This project will provide new air conditioning in the administrative offices at Andersen Elementary. The existing system’s main condensing unit failed and could not be easily replaced, Isaacs stated.
“The entire system, including the individual office evaporator heads, is obsolete, cannot be serviced, and requires replacement. The new system will consist of a new condensing unit as well as evaporator units in each office,” he stated.
Board Accepts Bid for Professional Development Services
The Board of Education approved a bid up to $300,000 from Corwin, a Sage Publishing Company, for teacher clarity method professional development services, using federal funding.
These professional development services will be a continuation of Union’s work with Corwin from the past three years on teacher clarity, building a stronger and more aligned roadmap for our teachers and our students, explained Chasity Gray, director of professional learning for Union Public Schools.
All elementary and secondary principals have been trained on how to support this work and build capacity within our schools and our elementary and secondary sites, as well as district-level professional development offerings, providing a deeper understanding on how to streamline our grade-level essential skills with student engagement and evidence-based practices – putting theory into application within our classrooms, she told the Board.
During the next three years, Union will onboard new teachers and provide deep coaching opportunities for existing leaders and teachers to elevate this work to the next level through workshops and job-embedded in-person coaching.
In other action, the Board renewed a subscription with Destiny Library Management for $139,093 to manage the district’s library management system.
