What's On The Menu In English Class?

4 High School students sit around a table and evaluate student-created restaurant menus.

The High School English classes for juniors hosted their first ever "Figurative Language Café."

Previously, juniors had been creating restaurant-style menus that showcase examples of figurative langugage, explained teacher Miranda Walton.

Today, all the juniors in English attended class in the Grand Hall where tables with dishes and menus had been set up for an interactive lesson. Students rotated from one table to the next. These rotations include evaluating menus, leaving written reviews, and sorting menu items by figurative language category.

Figurative language is the use of words or expressions that differ from their literal, dictionary definitions to add color, depth, and emotion to writing or speech.
