Student Life
Offices for Student Life are housed in the High School, commonly called the Activities Office. Student Life oversees all activities at the High School, including assemblies, Leadership activities, student organizations and events at the High School.
While the focus might be on activities at the High School, Student Life may help coordinate some Leadership activities at other school sites.
If you have questions about an activity located at a school site away from the High School, please contact your school.
Athletics, Spirit and Fine Arts activities are coordinated separately.

Be The 'Sixth Man' (Or Woman)
UHS bear with me…
There is a sports term, or ideology in sports, which claims that fans at a home stadium, venue, park, what have you, can help determine the outcome of the game through the energy they put forth during said game. It’s the belief that a group of people can “will” another group of people to achieve greatness or at least win a game. In basketball it’s called the “6th Man” as there are 5 players on the court. The “12th man” in football as there are 11 players on the field, etc. and so forth.
On Friday, March 14, 2025, while Oklahoma was in the middle of a windstorm of epic proportions, Union and Broken Arrow had a storm of their own inside Yukon High School as the two teams played for a chance to go to the 6A State Championship. It was incredible. Big lead for Union at halftime, BA makes a run to chip away and make it a game, but thanks to an untimely “T” by the Tigers, some great patience and ball control by our team, we won, as many of you know this. But what you don’t know or realize maybe is your impact on that game. This “impact” started at the sendoff earlier in the week and carried over to the games. I know, I watched you, the players heard you and Coach Garcia called you the “6th Man.” U were incredible!
You outmatched Broken Arrow’s energy at most every turn. “You can’t do that”,” let’s go Union”, and “airball” chants filled that arena. Your energy and enthusiasm put the Tiger’s student section to shame as your school spirit was something not seen in quite a while. “Rudy, Rudy, Rudy…” chants rang out as Coach Garcia emphatically voiced his displeasures with an official. Electric does not come close to explaining the energy! Now anyone who knows Broken Arrow knows their student section is great, but we were better on this night. I know, because as I said, I watched and heard you. And so did Broken Arrow…
So, what’s my point of writing this; I have two; (remember I asked you to bear with me).
First, everyone has an opportunity to have a positive influence on the person next to them. You influence your friends, your teachers, counselors and administrators with each word that you speak, but you also influence others, even without knowing their name. Many of you have done this over the past week with both girls’ and boys’ basketball teams making it to state. You do it at football games, band concerts, and musicals. “Cheer, Cheer, Cheer” in the arena of play. This is easy to do, and it has been missing, but you are bringing it back.
But what about in the halls, the classroom, on the bus or dare I say on your social media? Do you bring the positive energy for your fellow classmates there? Just a question, no judgement. My point: You have the opportunity to be someone’s “6th man” at many times throughout the day with your friends, but more importantly with someone you may not even know, and this can have a long-lasting positive impact.
Second, as Principal Beau Brannon would say “Let’s Go!” It is Union’s time to be back at the top, in EVERYTHING WE DO! We can do better in the classroom, in the field of play, on the stage and in the halls. We can be better than we have ever been in all aspects of our school. We are one of the most diverse high school communities in the state and there is great power in this. What makes us different is what makes us great. So, in the last nine weeks of this school year for the class of 2025, what will glow from the torch you pass to the class of ’26 on May 18th? Class of 2026 what are you prepared to do with that glow? Will you be the light which “lights the world”? Class of ’27 will you be the older sibling to the class of ’28 with dignity, grace and class? I challenge all of you to do just this, and I believe it starts when you become the 6th Man or Woman in someone’s life.
Respectfully,
Mr. James Douthat,
Assistant Principal for Student Life at Union High School
