History was made on Jan 12th! Union Sophomore Whitney Smith lit up the court at Edmond Memorial tying the school record hitting 7 of 13 3-pointers. Whitney now shares the record of most 3-pointers in a single game with 2010 alum McKenzie (Garcia) Bender & 1996 alum Emily (Warren) Barkley. Join us in celebrating Whitney's outstanding achievement & for etching her name among the best!
Billy Ray Sims is a favorite son of Oklahoma, a legend in Oklahoma football and a well-regarded entrepreneur, opening the first Billy Sims Barbecue in 2004 in Tulsa.
Sims was also the subject of Moore Elementary third grader Garrett Goumaz recent wax museum presentation – which eventually led to a visit from the Heisman Trophy winner in Emily Rhoads’ class, where all of Moore’s third graders got a chance to ask him questions today.
Sims answered questions about his football career, where he lived, his family life, his love for the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team, his favorite school subject of history and many, many more.
Sims’ visit delighted the kids almost as much as the adults, as teachers, the media specialist, Principal Beck King and more also asked questions.
When teacher Cassie Summers asked Sims if he still kept in touch with his former University of Oklahoma football coach, Barry Switzer – another Oklahoma favorite son - Sims said he does and – to the surprise of everyone in the classroom – called Switzer on the telephone. Alas, Switzer did not answer today, but Sims said, “He’ll call me back,” saying not only do they remain good friends but that Switzer’s memory is as sharp as ever. Sims is 69 and Switzer is 86.
Sims is an American former football running back who played in the National Football League for five seasons from 1980 to 1984. Sims played college football for the Oklahoma Sooners, where he was a two-time consensus All-American, and won the Heisman Trophy in 1978.
While Sims is undeniably a favorite son of Oklahoma football, he is also well known in Oklahoma now as co-owner of Billy Sims Barbecue, which has grown to more than 30 restaurants across six states. In fact, Billy Sims Barbecue will celebrate its 20th anniversary this year.
After answering questions, Sims signed a few autographs and then posed for pictures with the students.
