Paws for U-Therapy Dog Program

It is the mission of Paws for U, Union's therapy dog programming, to provide emotional, social, and academic support through the introduction and interaction of therapy certified dogs in Union Public Schools. Through this program, students, teachers, and guests have the opportunity to interact with therapy dogs. This approach has proven to improve student motivation and foster academic success, while lowering stress and anxiety.

Our goal at Union Public Schools is to provide this service to students and teachers throughout the school year. Handlers will follow an approved schedule and will only work in specifically designated areas of the building. We understand and respect that some students and teachers may choose not to participate in this program, due to individual preference, medical need or personal beliefs.

Paws For U Guidelines

Therapy Dog Guidelines for Classroom Visits

Download PDF of Guidelines

  •  Before a therapy dog enters a classroom, let the therapy dog/handler team know of any students who should not receive a visit from the dog for any reason (allergies, fear of dogs, no parent permission, etc.)
  • Students should make sure their area is free of any food the dog could encounter while in the classroom
  • Students are preferably seated in their chairs or on the carpet when the therapy dog/handler team enters the classroom
  • Students should remain seated and wait for the therapy dog to approach them. Once the team approaches, you can reach out and pet the therapy dog for a few seconds

*Please only pet the dog on his back, top of head, or under his chin
