2026 Projects - The Year Ahead
Renovations at the Union 6th 7th Grade Centers remain the centerpiece project of the most recent bond package. A lot of work remains, with plans that call for reconfiguring the school with the 6th Grade on the east side of the building and the 7th Grade on the west, as well as creating smaller learning environments and a redesigned cafeteria.
“One of the big things that had to happen was the installation of the new power plant, which was constructed off-site and installed in Union’s Central Park,” said Associate Superintendent Charlie Bushyhead. “Now we can proceed with the installation of the new HVAC system, replacing an antiquated system that has served this building for 33 years.”
To minimize the disruption to students, the dominos must be lined up in the right order. “The middle section of the 6th & 7th Grade Center is our big project for 2026,” said Dr. Josh Robinson, director of Operations. “We will be completing the restrooms, connecting all of the HVAC to the new system and doing a complete interior replacement of all new ceilings, finishes – flooring, paint, millwork, lighting – everything.”

Portable units which will be used as temporary classrooms or office space as groups of students or staff are relocated so work can begin. “In preparation for this work, we had converted a couple of classrooms into temporary offices, as we will need space for people to move into,” said Robinson.
He said the district’s goal is to minimize the impact on traditional core classrooms. “Beginning January 5, 2026, students and staff will start moving into the trailers. There are eight sections of trailers that have been assembled into one big temporary building at the north entrance of the school. Nine spaces will be utilized as either offices or classrooms, along with restrooms. Our goal is to put as few classrooms in the portable units as possible.”
Work on the central section of the school, both upstairs and downstairs, is expected to take all of 2026.
“Hopefully, by winter break of 2026, we would move everybody back, then commence work on the west part of the building in spring 2027,” said Robinson.
The 6th & 7th Grade Center project is expected to be completed in 2028.
