1550 Naming/Renaming of District Facilities

The Board of Education shall maintain consistent procedures in the naming of a new school facility and/or renaming of an existing facility. A new facility will be named after the site has been selected and plans for construction have been approved, or if any existing building is purchased. A facility currently owned by the district may be considered for naming or renaming if the facility will be changing the student population it houses or the function it serves; a petition is received requesting a name change; or the administration, staff, or the Board of Education requests a name change. The Board of Education shall have the flexibility to evaluate the significance of petitions and/or requests received concerning a name change. The Board of Education will appoint these naming committees as needed.

NAMING OF ELEMENTARY FACILITIES

The Board of Education will establish a committee for the purpose of naming elementary facilities. This committee will be composed of the following:

A.      One school administrator appointed by the Superintendent.

B.      One patron from each school affected, appointed by the PTA Council.

C.      One Board of Education member appointed by the Board (non-voting).

D.      One teacher appointed by the UCTA.

E.       One support person appointed by the USPA.

F.       One student from each school affected, appointed by the principal.

The president of the Board of Education will select the chairperson from one of the above named committee members. The chairperson will be responsible for establishing meetings and presenting a recommendation to the Board of Education.

NAMING OF SECONDARY AND OTHER DISTRICT FACILITIES

The Board of Education may establish a committee for the purpose of naming secondary schools and other district facilities. This committee will be composed of the following:

A.      One school administrator appointed by the Superintendent.

B.      Two patrons appointed by the PTA Council.

C.      One Board of Education member appointed by the Board (non-voting).

D.      One teacher appointed by the UCTA.

E.       One support person appointed by the USPA.

F.       A staff member for the appropriate area, appointed by the Superintendent.

G.      One student appointed by the student council.

The president of the Board of Education will select the chairperson from one of the above named committee members. The chairperson will be responsible for establishing meetings and presenting a recommendation to the Board of Education.

 

RETAINING SCHOOL NAME

A school which has been closed shall retain its original name as long as the facility is utilized for instructional purposes by the district.

 

RENAMING FACILITIES

A public announcement of the Board of Education’s consideration to rename a facility will be made by the Board of Education at its regular meeting.

The Board of Education will establish a committee for the purpose of renaming a facility. This committee will be composed of either of the following committee structures as stated in:

A.      Naming of Elementary Facilities, or

B.      Naming of Secondary Schools and Other District Facilities, whichever is applicable to the facility.

 

CRITERIA FOR NAMING/RENAMING OF DISTRICT FACILITIES

The following are criteria for selecting recommendations for the naming/renaming of district facilities:

A.      Elementary schools will be named in honor of a person who has rendered outstanding service to the Union Public School District, the community, the state, or the country; or by geographical location.

B.      All secondary schools will be named according to their function and geographical location, if applicable (e.g., Union East Junior High).

C.      Other district facilities or those used routinely for a specialized or multiple-purpose criteria may be decided by the committee appointed by the Board of Education.

D.      Areas within or around district facilities may be named with the approval of the Board of Education based on a recommendation from the Superintendent.

E.       Honors or memorials of students, faculty/staff, administrators, Board of Education members or others associated with the district and the placement thereof must be approved in advance by the Superintendent.
