Grove Teacher of the Year

Grove Elementary - Jeri Potter, Reading Specialist Reading specialist Jeri Potter has been named the 2019-2020 Teacher of the Year for Grove Elementary School. “I have always known I wanted to be a teacher,” Potter said. “It was my dream to set up a class, establish a routine and teach little minds. I loved my years as a classroom teacher. The relationships built with students and families were so meaningful and lasting.” She started with Union Public Schools in 2013, and all six at Grove Elementary as a reading specialist. “After four years in the classroom, my desire to help students build a strong reading foundation drove my decision to return to school at The University of Oklahoma and start my career as a reading specialist,” Potter said. “In my nine years in this position, I have had the privilege of meeting with small groups of students to help them meet specific reading goals. I lead a team of between eight and nine interventionists to meet the needs of the students at Grove Elementary. Watching students gain confidence in reading, helping ease the anxiety and frustration associated with reading and collaborating with teachers and staff makes for a successful intervention experience. I love my role at Grove, I love the intervention program I have built and I love teaching! Along with the intervention program, I serve Grove as the building test coordinator. I enjoy the challenge of coordinating all things testing.” Potter graduated from the University of Central Oklahoma in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education. In 2009, she graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a master’s degree in reading education. She holds a certificate in early childhood education and a reading specialist certificate.
