Career Connect Offerings

Program Offerings

The Union Career Connections program offers a variety of classes or programs designed to help young people connect with a career they are interested in pursuing. Note: Some of the dates are subject to change.

Career Connect

Manufacturing

Students meet at the High School each week (5th & 6th Hour) with a TCC Instructor.

The first semester consists of Manufacturing (Safety & Quality Training) curriculum through TCC.  Students must also pass the WorkKeys Test. 2nd Semester, students will have the potential for paid internships.  This program is still being developed. Full time employment is a possibility upon graduation for seniors. Drug testing will be required for a paid position. Students myst be 18 years old for this program.

City of Tulsa Automotive Technician Internship

Students can enroll in either of three blocks:

  • 2nd/3rd hour
  • 4th/5th hour
  • 5th/6th hour

It is open to juniors and seniors.

The City of Tulsa provides aprons and steel toed boots.  Students will learn how to write tickets for work orders, issue parts, and shadow on the floor.  During this time, they will also be eligible to take all of the on-line classes for Ford Certification and International Fleet Certification.  There are still physical classes required to complete certification, but the City of Tulsa is trying to partner with Ford and International to see if they will pay for the additional classes.

During the second semester there is an opportunity for paid positions after school and for summer.  Full time employment is a possibility upon graduation for seniors. Drug testing will be required for a paid position.

Associated Builders and Contractors Internship

The Associated Builders and Contractors will offer construction internships that will be available to juniors and seniors.  Office placements, electrician apprenticeships, plumbing, HVAC, and general contracting placements are available to students with their own transportation second semester.

General Service Learning

Union also offers placements in

  • IT (High School)
  • Peer Tutor (9th Grade)
  • Peer Tutor (HS 2nd, 4th & 6th hours available)

If students can secure their own placement at any district site or with a company/community service organization, they are welcome to enroll in Service Learning.  They need a completed application and a signature from me before a schedule is changed if possible.  Open to juniors and seniors.  This is a great opportunity to job shadow and explore career options or to use class time for community service volunteering. Transportation is a must if traveling off campus.

Administrative Changes Announced

Scott Pennington named director of new Hope – Guidance – Social and Emotional Learning Department; Clayton Hucke named interim 7th Grade Principal

Dear Union Parents and Guardians:

I am excited to announce that Mr. Scott Pennington, principal at the Union 6th & 7th Grade Center, has been asked to lead a new department within Teaching and Learning entitled Hope – Guidance – Social and Emotional Learning. As you know, we are in the second year of our five-year district strategic plan. One of the elements of this plan is Union’s Learning Model that focuses on literacy, cognitive capacity, engagement, and social and emotional learning.

As we continuously evaluate our data, and hear from teachers and our site leaders, there continues to be a dominant narrative that more must be done to address the social and emotional development of our students. Collectively speaking, our teachers continue to do amazing work in providing dynamic learning experiences for our students. It is now time for us to articulate a tiered approach to addressing unwanted student behaviors and student trauma – at all grade levels – while also fostering greater hope and confidence in our students’ lives. The idea is that we will be more proactive in our efforts, providing counseling and guidance to address the social, emotional, and academic needs of our students. I firmly believe this will make a positive difference in our students’ lives and in the learning culture of our buildings.

Mr. Pennington’s work as a special education teacher, assistant principal, and principal make him uniquely qualified to lead in this new position. In addition to this change, I am also pleased to announce that Mr. Clay Hucke, assistant principal at Union High School, has been asked to serve as an interim principal at the Sixth & Seventh Grade Center. Mr. Hucke has done an outstanding job at the high school and he looks forward to serving the students, staff, and parents at this site.

Please join me in congratulating Mr. Pennington and Mr. Hucke. These moves will become effective January 1, 2020.

Respectfully,

Kirt Hartzler, Ed.D.
Superintendent
Union Public Schools
