Andersen Teacher of the Year

Andersen Elementary – Alisa Lee, Physical Education

Andersen Elementary – Alisa Lee, Physical Education

Alisa Lee, who teaches physical education, has been named the Andersen Elementary Teacher of the Year. She has been with Union since 2007, starting at Andersen.

“My favorite unit of Physical Education is my Healthy Heart Unit,” she said.  “This unit utilizes health, science, fitness and fun for all students.  I love the Healthy Heart Unit because it has an impact on everyone.  We all have a heart and we need to learn to keep it healthy for a lifetime of great health.”

Students learn that the heart is a muscle that works 24/7, she said.  “It never gets a vacation.  The heart is such an important muscle that we must take extra care to keep it in great shape.  Students learn the basics; they need 60 minutes of play every day.  I stress that they need to choose something that is interesting so that they enjoy their daily play and keep up the routine. Students will learn about the anatomy of the heart with a couple of different games. We play Four Chamber Fitness and even participate in a giant obstacle course that teaches the cycle of blood carrying oxygen/carbon dioxide from the heart and lungs to and from all parts of the body.

Students also learn about risk factors that can cause heart disease.  Risky Business is a fun and vigorous tag game that incorporates the risk factors:   high cholesterol, high blood pressure, stress, obesity, inactivity, smoking, diabetes and heredity.

“I know the healthy heart lessons have made an impact when students go out of their way to tell me about the good health choices they are making months after the Healthy Heart unit is over.”

Lee has a bachelor’s of science in education from Oklahoma State University, and she is certified in physical education Pre-K – 12th.
