Union Expands Summer School Programming

School is out; summer school is in.

Thanks to increased federal funding as part of the COVID-19 pandemic, Union has received considerable monies through Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund to pay for expanded programs and will offer a myriad of summer school programming options.

Secondary students in grades 6-12, who have been an encouraged to participate, will have eight weeks of various programs including first time credit, credit recovery, skills camps and intensive grade recovery boot camp at Union High School.

Five secondary school sites will run summer programs with 72 teachers and all of Union’s administrators.  Union has invited 2,845 secondary students (out of 7,776 currently enrolled) to be a part of these programs. While not all students invited will participate, Union is hopeful a large percentage will.

At the 6th/7th Grade Center, Union will offer three two-week sessions, hoping to target 200 students in each session. The 8th Grade Center will offer two programs in math and English remediation. Some 500 students have or will be invited to participate based on testing.

At the Union Freshman Academy, students can participate in Credit Recovery class, ASPIRE, English Learning classes and even classes offered by the Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps. Meanwhile at the High School, students can work on recovering their credits, their test skills for PSAT, virtual learning classes, a “Success Camp,” English Learning, and even programs through Union Alternative.

Elementary offerings have also been expanded this year.

In addition to Extended Day Program’s annual summer camp at Grove Elementary, Union will offer Native American classes at Jefferson in June, summer learning for at-risk students at the High School in June and July, virtual language and literacy courses throughout the summer, as well as small group tutoring classes in math, reading science and social studies for invited students at Moore, Darnaby, Boevers, Roy Clark, Jefferson, McAuliffe, Ellen Ochoa and Rosa Parks in June and July.

But wait! There’s more.

Union will offer enrichment classes for students to eager to learn in STEM at Darnaby, sports camps at Jefferson, an architecture camp at Jefferson, and ongoing assessments at all sites. Union will bring back its PreK Bridge Camp in early August to help young students meet their teachers and new friends. And, both Ellen Ochoa and McAuliffe will offer their neighborhood bookmobiles which will tour their community on a weekly basis.

The Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act, 2021 (CRRSA), was signed into law on December 27, 2020, and provides an additional $54.3 billion for the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund (ESSER II Fund). Union, which has received its portion of those funds in waves, will receive in total about $24 million, although how those funds can be used is limited in scope – largely designed to ensure that students do not fall behind in their learning because of the past year’s constant interruptions due to forced virtual learning, quarantines and other issues associated with the pandemic.
