Boevers Elementary – Rachel Shelby, reading specialist / English Language Lead
Reading specialist/English Language Lead Rachel Shelby has been named Teacher of the Year for Boevers Elementary School.
“When I started my journey I knew I wanted to work with children, but I didn’t know how that would look,” Shelby said. “I originally wanted to focus on juvenile corrections but then quickly realized I could have a positive impact on more children working within a school. Through teaching early childhood, I have been a part of building a solid foundation for them academically and emotionally. Since being a teacher, I have always had a passion for helping our English Learners. So many of our students come with many barriers to face but bring so much to our classrooms. I am so thankful for the opportunity to learn about their many cultures and diverse backgrounds.”
Shelby has been with Union Public Schools since August 2016.
“Due to the experiences last year, I am happy we are all starting off in person,” Shelby said. “I feel I am better equipped to teach students during a pandemic this year, but have realized the importance of the need of an emotional support systems students.”
