Highsteppers

The Union Highsteppers dance team provides half-time entertainment by dancing at home football and basketball games as well as selected away games. The Highsteppers perform routines on the sidelines for football as well as cheers with the cheerleaders as appropriate throughout the game. They also participate in pep rallies, spirit lines, competitions and many community activities.

Requirements

Requirements to become a Union Highstepper are as follows:

The following are the required skills for a Union Highstepper team member. The requirements for each level do not necessarily need to be mastered if the candidate can demonstrate the technique and potential to master the element in the near future with training.

8th Grade Highsteppers: Right and left double pirouettes, right and left leaps, right splits.

JV Highsteppers: Right triple pirouette, left double pirouette, right and left splits, leaps in second, saute fan, right chaine leap, turns in second (straight leg fouettes), intermediate/advanced kick combinations.

Varsity Highsteppers: Right and left splits, leaps in second, saute fan, fouette turn combinations, right and left triple pirouettes, right and left calypso leaps, right and left inside pirouettes, advanced kick combinations, stylized jazz combinations.

Competitions are encouraged and expected for our dance squads. The following is an approximation for the squads:

  • Varsity squad participants should plan to attend a State competition and an additional 3-4 competitions per year including Regional and National level competitions.
  • Junior-Varsity squad participants should plan to attend State competition and an additional 3-4 competitions per year including Regional and National level competitions. Any competitions out-of-state but will be within an approved driving distance of 5 hours or 300 miles from the Tulsa area.
  • 9th grade squad participants should plan to attend a State competition and an additional 2-3 in-state competitions
  • 8th grade squad participants should plan to attend State competition and an additional 2-3 in-state competitions.
  • All competitions will be chosen by the coaches and approved by the director of athletics.
  • All competition times, locations and dates will be announced at a later date.

Teacher Job Fair March 28

Job Fair

Union Public Schools will host a Teacher Job Fair from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 28 at Ellen Ochoa Elementary School, 12000 E. 31st Street. No appointments are necessary. Download flyer.

Staff will be available to interview qualified applicants and make employment offers on-site. Interested candidates may apply early online at www.unionps.org/careers and create their application under “Job Fair.”

Teacher of the Year Reception

Union Public Schools will recognize its 2019-2020 School Site Teachers of the Year – and name the District Teacher of the Year – at a formal reception at 4:45 p.m. February 26, at the Union Performing Arts Center, 6636 S. Mingo Road.
