Ellen Ochoa students learned about good nutrition, tried some blueberries and fruit and then joined Union Football for some strength conditioning training during a summer school field to the UMAC today.
Students started the day with student athletes at the High School track. Students had a chance to run, jump, throw and see what our 7th-12th grade students get to do as a member of the track team. Members of Union’s track coaching staff, as well as student helpers, took the students through a variety of events in special rotations.
From there, students walked to the classrooms at the UMAC for a lesson on "The Healthy Athlete" and the kinds of food an athlete eats. Lisa Griffin, director of Child Nutrition, spoke to the kids about the important food groups.
Students enjoyed lunch, as well as a snack tray of fruits, before heading back outside to the football field below. Union Football and Strength and Conditioning staff took the students through a work out and activities that involved running and weight training using the new facilities under the stadium.
Afterwards, a panel of student-athletes shared their experiences and lead a question/answer segment with the elementary students.
