Rosa Parks Elementary, a Global Gardens site since 2008, has won the “Best Overall School Garden” award sponsored by the Oklahoma Farm Bureau Women’s Committee (OKFB).
Principal Heather Federline, surrounded by students involved in the program, accepted a $1,000 check this afternoon from OKFB representatives,
This is the first-ever school garden contest held by the OKFB, celebrating the important role that school gardens have in communities’ engagement with agriculture, a Global Gardens spokeswoman said.
Rosa Parks’ school garden spreads into three sections, all facilitated with Global Gardens’ students and families: during school garden beds, individual gardens beds for after school program, and Family Food Farm garden beds. Unique features of the Global Gardens site include a “Peace House,” where students can work together through conflicts, a sustainable rain barrel system that collects rain water and is used for garden watering, student art and murals scattered throughout the garden, and an outdoor cooking space that provides seed-to-plate experiences for students and families.
About Global Gardens: https://global-gardens.org/about
Global Gardens is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty and empowering students to become agents of change in their communities through inquiry-based science and peace education. Founded in 2007 as a response to the issue of inequitable education for children from low-income homes, Global Gardens is serving approximately 4,000 individuals across fourteen sites in FY2022. Approximately 94% of Global Gardens students qualify for free or reduced lunches.
Global Gardens engages students in school- and community-based gardening programs aimed at four primary goals: (1) Students will improve their nutritional health. (2) Through the process of scientific inquiry, students will become active learners. (3) Students will take a peaceful approach to themselves and the world around them. (4) Students will develop the skills and attitudes needed to become agents of change in their own lives and communities.
