Public Input Sought As Union School Board Considers 2022-2023 School Calendar

Board Considers 2022-2023 School Calendar

The Board of Education, on first reading Monday, February 14, considered approval of the new 2022-2023 school calendar. The Board is reviewing three proposals for next year’s calendar. The Board will consider final approval during second reading at its next meeting on March 7.

All three versions call for the first day of school on Wednesday, August 17, with the last day being either June 1 or June 2. All three calendars call for 172 instructional days.

The biggest difference between the three options is how Union Public Schools might handle winter break with Christmas falling on a Sunday:

  • Option 1 -  11 days off, starting December 19 through January 2, 2023.
  • Option 2 - 10 days off, starting December 21 through January 3, 2023.
  • Option 3 - 11 days off, starting December 23 through January 6, 2023.

Instead of virtual days, all three options include seven professional development days with no school planned. Since Union ended Late Start Fridays during the pandemic’s onset in 2020, professional collaboration has been limited. Union will not schedule planned virtual days, instead opting for more professional development built into the calendar.

Board Approves 2021-2022 Early Retirement Incentive Program

Board members approved the 2021-2022 Early Retirement Incentive program for certified employees.

The ERI Program for certified employees is intended to serve the needs of the school district, not only by providing some savings over time to the district, but also by increasing long-term retention of teachers, who are incentivized under the ERI program to remain with Union longer.

Jay Loegering, executive director of Human Resources, said the certified ERI program has the potential to save the district $211,710.
