Teacher Of The Year Spotlight: Madalyn Evans

Special Education teacher Madalyn Evans has been named Teacher of the year at Ellen Ochoa Elementary.

“I always wanted to spend my days helping people or animals,” Evans said. “I thought I would become a veterinarian and live at an orangutan orphanage, but once I got into college, I began to consider teaching. I loved that I would be able to impact students’ lives and help them along their educational journey. I have loved my new role as an ER1 teacher because it has allowed me to work even closer with students to help them reach their goals and grow their confidence as humans in this world.”

Evans taught at Union for one year in 2015 before moving away for a few years. “When I returned to Oklahoma, I began teaching at Ellen Ochoa and this is my fourth year here and back with Union.”

She said, “Teaching is always a roller coaster ride! Every year you think, ‘this is not normally how things are going at this point in the year!’ In reality, there is no normal in education. We adjust and adapt to do what is best for kids. This year is no different.”

Evans graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 2012 with a degree in elementary education.

“I am certified for early childhood, elementary and mild to moderate. I taught at Mustang Public Schools for three years, Union for a year and Minnesota for a year before returning to Union Public Schools. I taught fourth and fifth grade for five years before adding my special education certificate and becoming an ER1 teacher at Ellen Ochoa in 2018. This is my ninth year in education.”
