Fifth grade teacher Alexandra “Alex” Loomis has been named the Jefferson Elementary Teacher of the Year.
“I wanted to become a teacher from a very young age,” Loomis said. “I loved all of my teachers and can still name every elementary teacher and most of my secondary teachers as well. I would play ‘school’ at home all the time and would make my cousins be my students. When I was a teenager, I worked at my mom’s dance studio as an assistant teacher and that’s when I really realized how much I loved helping kids accomplish their goals.”
Loomis has been teaching at Union since 2017.
“Teaching this year is difficult in many ways,” Loomis said. “We are seeing kids come back to the classroom that haven’t been in a school since March 2020. My school and my team have really focused on building the student’s social emotional skills and fostering a real sense of community in our classrooms. Although this year has been very challenging, we are also seeing a lot of social and academic growth already.”
Loomis has a bachelor’s degree in elementary education with minors in language arts and science.
