Dr. Chris McNeil Kicks Off Beyond U Conference

Serving as keynote speaker for the Beyond U Senior Conference this morning, Dr. Chris McNeil talked to students about the importance of education.

But it’s more than just getting a degree, he said, you have to learn the skills too. “Skills are what get you employed,” McNeil said. He related his experiences and those of a few others as he encouraged students to think about choices they will make after graduation.

McNeil, who is also a member of the Board of Education, talked to some 1,000 seniors assembled at the Union Performing Arts Center before seniors were to board buses for the conference at Oklahoma State University- Tulsa in downtown Tulsa. He has been part of a new initiative called “Black Men In White Coats,” an effort to recruit more people of color into the field of medicine, especially doctors.

This one-day event provides seniors the opportunity to attend breakout sessions of their choosing on a variety of topics related to college, careers, and successful “adulting.”

With more than 40 different sessions being offered, seniors will be able to choose four sessions that are relevant and interesting to them. Examples of session topics include: College Academics 101, Financial Aid, The College Social Scene, Cracking Your Career Code, Art in the Digital Age, Enlisting in the Military, Your Digital Footprint, Social Justice, Stress Management and Self-Care, various career interest sessions (medicine, skilled trades, cosmetology, engineering, social work, performing arts, etc.), and much more.
