Union Public Schools takes part every year in Read Across America Week, a national observance which motivates children and teens in the love of reading. It is celebrated around the birthday of children's author Dr. Seuss, whose birthday was March 2. See how Darnaby Elementary is encouraging its students to pursue reading. About Darnaby’s Reading Warriors program
Dear Darnaby Families,
Mrs. Leatherland and her committee of teachers have been working hard to plan a fabulous Read Across America Week for your child. The theme for this year is Darnaby Read-A-Thon: “Reading Warriors”. We are excited to be able to join forces with the fundraising experts at Boosterthon to assist us with our Read-A-Thon fundraiser. The Read-A-Thon kicked off on February 24th and will continue through March 5th. Throughout the program, students read each day, at home and at school, to complete reading challenges while also getting pledges to help our school. Each day of Read Across America Week, March 1st – 5th will be packed with fun to encourage your child to read. This year’s Read-A-Thon will culminate with a Reading Warrior Obstacle Course on Friday, March 5th, where our top fundraiser from each homeroom will race through the obstacle course to claim the prize of the Ultimate Reading Warrior!
Our goal for the Read-A-Thon is to promote literacy and to raise funds for before and after school clubs and tutoring. We are blessed at Darnaby to be able to support a variety of clubs and activities with these funds and are striving to expand our programming. We are currently able to provide teacher stipends and/or purchase necessary materials to support our Elements Science Club, Robotics Team, Academic Team, Chess Club, Run Club, KDES Broadcast, Safety Patrol, Rangers and Company, Accelerated Math Tutoring as well as providing after-school tutoring in both reading and math. With a successful fundraiser this year, we hope to be able to add three additional clubs next year: Darnaby Art Factory, Darnaby Diggers and Little Bots. We hope that you will choose to support this important fundraiser.
Sincerely, Principal Chris Reynolds
