Union Public Schools will now offer FREE food to children through June 30, 2021 after the Department of Agriculture extended a federal waiver allowing school districts across the country to offer free meals to all children.
The extension means that Union can serve meals at no cost to any child, age 0-18 years of age in the community, without a student ID or proof of enrollment.
The USDA – in an unprecedented move, due to the pandemic – made school breakfast and lunch available FREE to all children through December but recently extended its waiver through June. This decision means that even students who are not ordinarily part of the free or reduced lunch programs will also be included in these free meal distributions. You also do not have to attend Union Public Schools in order to receive free meals.
Lisa Griffin, director of Child Nutrition, also expects to make more exciting announcements in the weeks ahead.
And while students attending school in-person get free meals, the service continues to be free for virtual learning students and any non-Union students also.
Virtual learning students and any non-Union children may now pick-up meals – lunch and breakfast – each weekday. (In-person students eat for free at school also.)
Instead of placing orders ahead of time, families now will visit a delivery site as needed. Once you arrive at the site, you will call a phone number to arrange curbside delivery.
