WHAT: Union High School seniors will sign a steel I-beam that will be placed in the new stadium’s west side that is currently under construction.
WHEN: Wednesday, October 21, 3 – 4 p.m.
WHO: Seniors of the Class of 2021 will leave their mark on the steel beam that will be placed in a Topping Out Ceremony during halftime at the Oct. 23 Varsity Football Game on Seniors’ Night at 7 p.m. when Union plays Norman North. Flags will be flown from the beam when it is put into place by a large crane.
WHERE: On the field at Union’s Tuttle Stadium, 6900 S. Mingo Rd., Tulsa, OK
(Parking instructions/field access): News media can either park at the UMAC, 6836 S. Mingo Rd. and go down the stairs to the field; or they may park in the north parking lot of Union High School, 6636 S. Mingo Rd., and walk across the oval to the gate on the northwest side of the field.
DETAILS: Topping out ceremonies are a builders' rite traditionally held when the last beam is placed atop a structure during its construction.
“Given all of the disruption this year, we wanted to give Union seniors something fun to look forward to,” said Superintendent Dr. Kirt Hartzler. “Their names will have a permanent place of honor in the new stadium.”
Demolition of the 43-year-old structure’s west side began in January 2020. Construction of the new stadium complex will include improved accessibility on the “home” side, including redesigned concessions and restrooms. The creation of a fine arts addition at the north end zone will serve as the home of the Union Band program. Other additions include a new wrestling practice area, expanded weight and locker rooms, as well as a new press box. The final phase of the project will include high school interior renovations. The new stadium is expected to open in 2021, followed by the fine arts addition in 2022.
