Union ‘I Care’ to collect donations for needy this holiday season

Perhaps few programs in Union stir as many feelings and tears of joy as the annual “I Care” Holiday Project which strives to provide food and gifts for the less fortunate within its school district.

“I Care” has been giving back to the community since 1996 and this year organizers hope to help more than 938 families – including 1,906 children. This number is markedly up from 751 families and 1,552 children in 2008.

“This number will increase with some last-minute applicants,” said organizer Danny Williams. He hopes to collect $52,000 by December 18 to pay for gifts and food.

The project is made possible by his cadre of volunteers and students in the Drug-Free Youth program, as well as the many people and businesses who donate time and money. The effort is part of the district’s Character Counts! program which teaches students the importance of such things as caring, responsibility, and citizenship.

Distribution of the gifts will be held at the UMAC from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Dec. 9-11 and on Dec. 14.

If you would like to donate, D-FY is suggesting $25 donations per child and $50 donations per family, he said. People who wish to donate may make checks payable to “Union D-FY” and mail to:
