Resources

Peters Elementary is a nationally accredited school located within the city limits of Tulsa's neighbor, Broken Arrow. Housing additions that feed into the school include Brick Town, Quail Run, Turtle Creek, Stone Mill, Floral Haven, Washington Estates and portions of Country Aire. Currently, school enrollment totals a little more than 600 students. It serves preschool, kindergarten and first through fifth grades.

PetersTom W. Peters Elementary was named in May 1978 after the founder of Oklahoma Greenhouses. Peters served on the Union Public Schools Board of Education for 16 years and was known for ensuring that cafeterias were built in Union schools.

Peters Elementary is a First Amendment Affiliate School. We are committed to teach and model the democratic principles of freedom and democracy. We are continually developing curriculum designed to support and promote responsible citizenship as well as providing opportunities for students to learn moral character skills and to practice service learning.

Excellence

Students at Peters consistently score above average on standardized tests, including the Oklahoma School Testing Program Criterion-Referenced Tests, the District Criterion Referenced Tests and the Star Reading and Math Tests.

There are 38 members of the faculty, many of whom hold degrees past the bachelor's level, and each of them is certified by the state of Oklahoma in the areas they teach. Our teachers believe in quality learning for all students. Therefore, they spend additional time participating in professional development classes and are members of professional learning communities. Their focus is to work together to improve student achievement.  Time is spent studying grade level essential skills, developing different kinds of assessment tools, analyzing student achievement, and implementing research based teaching strategies.

Parents

Parental interest and involvement is reflected by the overwhelming support and attendance at school functions. Community support for education is strong as the Peters community consistently supports school bond issues. Indeed, dedicated teachers, committed parents, and eager students supply the needed ingredients for a successful school program.

Programs

LoopingPeters

Students in primary grades have the same teacher for two successive years in what is called looping.  A two-year span with the same teacher provides a child with greater continuity in experience, both socially and academically.

Special Services

Many special programs are housed at Peters. These include classes for the mentally challenged, services for the visually impaired and those students requiring speech and language therapy. Services are also provided for students with learning disabilities and those students needing remedial reading. Inclusion and pull-out programs are offered in all areas. An occupational therapist and a physical therapist also provide services to students who qualify. Students who qualify for the intellectually gifted program attend academic resource classes.

Extended Day Program

The Extended Day Program (EDP) provides safe, alternative educational child care, enhancing the child’s extended day. Recognizing the busy lifestyles of today’s family, the district attempts to work in partnership with home and parents by providing before and after school supervision at the school site. Extended Day Program hours are 7:00-8:55 a.m. and 3:25-6:00 p.m.

Specialty classes

Specialty classes in the areas of music, art and physical education are in place as students are combined from various classes within each grade level, and attendance is scheduled on a rotation plan. A media specialist, a school nurse and a school counselor are also on staff to provide services. A computer tech is on staff providing technology assistance in the computer lab. A mini-lab is also contained within the library for additional services.

Peters

Leadership

Various activities and leadership opportunities are provided through the following: Service Projects, library aides, Peters Choir, student council, peer mediation, safety patrol, spelling bee, Junior Great Books, PTA Reflections, Youth Arts, drama, T.V. Studio aides, student newspaper and Chess Club.

Readers are Leaders

Peters’ students are excited about reading.  Each student receives a nine-week goal based on their individualized reading level.  After they read books they take a computerized comprehension test.  These tests help students focus on sequencing, plot, characterization and vocabulary.  They love showing off all the book charms they earn for each 100 percent rating they receive on the comprehension test.  This Accelerated Reading Program has helped to generate this excitement about reading!
