Varsity Cheer – Coaches Stacey Beams and Cat Weeden
Cheerleaders increase crowd participation for football games, basketball games and wrestling matches. Cheerleaders determine which chants and cheers should be performed as other spirit squads follow their lead. Cheerleaders attend all home and away games, pep rallies and as many community activities as possible.
The following are the required skills for a Union Cheerleader. In addition, you will have the option to perform a higher scoring tumbling pass and/or standing tumbling along with the following required skills for the tryout:
8th Grade Cheer: Round off, toe touch, best side herkie, and best front hurdler
9th Grade Cheer: Round off backhandspring, toe touch, best side herkie, and best front hurdle
JV Cheer: Round off back tuck, standing backhandspring, toe touch, pike and best front hurdler
Varsity Cheer: Round off backhandspring back tuck, standing back tuck, toe touch, pike, and best front hurdler
Competitions are encouraged and expected for our squads. The following is an approximation for the squads:
2012-2012 Varsity Cheerleaders
Thirty-one girls have been selected as the 2012-13 Union Varsity Cheerleading Team. With a strong history of numerous 6A state championships and four recent back-to-back National Titles, the team is focused on continuing the legacy.
“This is a very strong team, in fact, one of the strongest I’ve had the honor of coaching,” says Co-Head Coach Cat Weeden. “I have high hopes and am confident we will come home with Regional, State and National Titles again this year.”
The team has an extremely high overall Grade Point Average (GPA) with many of the girls carrying a 4.0 GPA and being members of the National Honor Society and National Junior Honor Society.
“Our girls are active in community service, school clubs, their churches and other outside activities. They are a great example of leadership and are positive role models for their peers,” says Co-Head Coach Stacey Beams.
The team includes 14 seniors, nine juniors and eight sophomores:
Seniors: Brianna Beasley, Gabby Claxton, Britain Drennan, Treyce Glidden, Kiersten Haws, Brie Jackson, Brooke Johanson, Malorie Kalens, Mackenzie Kulka, Kelsey Leggett, Megan Majewski, Abbey Pellow, Brittney Rutledge and Haleigh Trentham.
