Union's Kennedy Austin named All-Metro Girls Track Athlete of the Year

KENNEDY AUSTIN had been on the podium at state each year.

Fourth place. Third place. Second place.

Heading into her senior season at Union, Austin knew she would have one more shot at gold.

"I was like, 'I'm going to win the 100 this year,' " she said. " 'I'm not letting anything stop me. I'm focused and everything is going on the track. I'm leaving it all on the track at that last meet.' "

That's what Austin did, capping an undefeated season in the 100-meter dash with a victory in Class 6A at the state meet last month. She also was the anchor leg on two championship relay teams and is the Tulsa World's All-Metro Girls Track Athlete of the Year.

"I tried so hard at it," Austin said. "... I finally reached first place and it was such a big accomplishment."

Austin, who plans to run at the University of Tulsa, is the first Redskin to win the 100 since 1984. She took up track after moving from California in junior high.

"It was just something I knew I was good at and something I knew all my friends were doing," she said. "I didn't know what I was going to do. I didn't even know I had this type of talent."

Her coaches soon took note, and as a freshman, Austin already was an anchor on her relays.

"Being an anchor on a relay, people don't understand it's complete pressure," she said. "When you're in last place or battling against somebody for first place, it all depends on you.

"Everybody expects their anchor to pull it through for them and get them that gold medal."

For four years, Austin has been the constant for the Redskins, who were state runners-up this season. She said taking first in the 400 and 800 relays meant as much to her as her personal success.

"Once I got that baton and I hit that corner, I hit the long stretch," she said. "I didn't want to leave my younger teammates with a silver or a bronze.

"I wanted them to have a gold medal in that relay."
