Every year on March 14, math aficionados unite to celebrate their most coveted holiday: Pi Day. On this particular Pi Day, the FOCUS Team at the Union 8th Grade Center participated in six different competitions, where 112 students showcased their knowledge of Pi. They answered trivia questions about the number Pi and edible pie. They competed in a relay race where they had to roll out a pie crust, dance with a circle, and solve math problems using Pi. The highlights of the day included students reciting digits of Pi, and participating in a pie eating contest. Several students memorized Pi to over 60 places, but Kajuan Ceasar won the competition by reciting 110 digits. In the pie eating contest, students were allotted 3 minutes and 14 seconds to eat as much pie as they could. Many thanks go out to Mrs. Paula Ontko, Mrs. Tonya Wyatt, Mrs. Mary Riley and their students for preparing our pies. After all the gobbling and scarfing was finished, Antoine Lovejoy emerged victorious, and full. It is safe to say, the students had fun…in school…using math…and cheering for their classmates. What a day.
