The following letter was emailed to parents last week. More updates to come!
Greetings Parents!
I am very excited to say that your children are in the giving spirit! Tomorrow in class (Friday, December 4) we will be discussing the Macy’s Make a Wish campaign. I’m sure that many of you have seen the commercials showing Virginia dropping her letter to Santa into the giant red mailbox at Macy’s. For each letter that is collected, Macy’s will donate one dollar to the Make a Wish Foundation.
In order to give to others this holiday season, as well as become better writers, we are writing our own letters to Santa to contribute to Macy’s campaign! (Those who do not celebrate Christmas, and choose not to participate with the Macy’s campaign will be writing a letter to me.) Instead of writing the typical “gimme list”, we are writing to tell Santa about the things that we can do to help others this year. Students are being encouraged to write things that they can do themselves, and that cost little or no money. Some great examples that we have discussed in class are cleaning out closets and donating clothes, dropping spare change in the Salvation Army buckets, volunteering at our churches and organizations, etc…
If you would like to get your family involved, please feel free to write a letter also! Students will be bringing home their rough drafts and a rubric for you to sign and to help them write their letters. Their rough drafts, rubrics, and stamp will be due on Thursday, December 10. Their final copies will be written in class on Friday, December 11.
The letters will be mailed to Macy’s main offices for official counts, so they DO need stamps. Students have been asked to bring a stamp, and can bring up to five for extra credit points (one point per extra stamp). Several teachers have jumped on board for this exciting project, and we will all be turning in our letters to the Macy’s at Woodland Hills Mall during the week of December 14th-18th. I will be sending an exact time a date soon if you would like to join us!
Thank you for your help and support!
