Cedar Ridge first grade students from Mrs. Rhees, Mrs. Snodgrass, and Ms Dezell’s classes will be traveling around the world. They will be marking their passports as they are learning about relationships between people and environments, and the connections between people and places. During this social studies unit, they will be learning how to use encyclopedias, timelines, visual images, atlases, maps, globes, and computer-based technologies.
In this integrated unit they will be reading stories with characters and settings from other countries to compare and contrast their own neighborhood/community. Discussions will include how people from different parts of the world eat, dress, speak different languages, and live in different kinds of houses. Teachers chose their particular countries because of their own travels. Ms. Dezell was chosen as a “Fund for Teachers” grant winner and received a trip to New Zealand. She is putting this opportunity to work as she shares what she learned as a direct result from her grant.
