Story by Karen Pearman NBCT 2008, ARC Enrichment Specialist, Boevers Elementary

Susan Henderson, Boevers language arts specialist, recently received a grant from the Donors Choose program. It’s a program where companies choose which teacher’s projects they would like to fund. US Cellular selected Henderson’s puppet project. With the money received, Henderson purchased 20 puppets and sets of Reader’s Theater scripts.
Henderson goal is to increase her student’s fluency and do Reader’s Theater in a creative way. She says her students really enjoy reading with a puppet, especially if they’re shy in front of a group. Fifth grade students got to try out the puppets on Monday, September 28 and Tuesday, September 29 when they performed two plays, “The Disappearing Trash” and “Play Ball”, for an excited group of kindergarteners. Henderson plans to use them with all grade levels and perform plays throughout the year.
