Hello Jarman families! I can’t believe we have almost completed the first quarter of the school year. In such a short time, we have had many opportunities to get to know students and families. I would like to give a huge thanks to Gina Rossow for organizing our Family Fun night! She did an outstanding job putting together a wonderful event for our families. Additionally, we have had our Back To School Nights, where families were invited to learn about classroom expectations and curriculum.  Thank you to all who were able to come to these events. We look forward to seeing all families during our upcoming conference dates, which are on October 23rd and 25th from 4 to 7 p.m. Please look for more information coming home from your child’s teacher. We encourage 100% participation from families during conferences to ensure that we are helping each student reach their full learning potential together.

Over the past several weeks, you may have heard your child or your child’s teacher discuss their independent reading level with you (Levels A through Z). Assessing this level and allowing students a great deal of independent reading time each day has become one of our literacy goals school wide. Research tells us that children need to read at least 90 minutes a day just to maintain their reading level. In order to advance levels, they need at least 120 minutes a day of independent reading time. This research has helped us develop the focus of ensuring that we assess each student appropriately and help them build the capacity and stamina to read this amount of time each day. We are also asking families to help in this effort at home. We would be happy to answer any questions you may have on how you can better help your child with their independent reading. We would also like to express appreciation to our phenomenal PTA for purchasing the books needed to complete the independent reading level assessments.

As always, we thank each of you for being involved in your child’s learning. We couldn’t do our jobs without the help of families. Thank you in advance for making attendance a priority for your child to ensure that we are able to maximize instructional time. Please continue to make appointments outside of school hours when possible. Additionally, we appreciate students being to school on time before the 8:25 tardy bell Monday through Thursday and 8:50 on Fridays.  Thank you for your help and support. We look forward to seeing you during family conferences!  Lastly, I would like to express our sympathy for loss of Chasity Martinez. Chasity was a dedicated wife and mother and longtime patron of Jarman Elementary.

Sincerely,
Principal Shawna Thompson
