7th grade chess team wins state tournament
Originallly posted November 29, 2018
The Union 7th Grade Chess Team is number one in Oklahoma! On November 17, three Team Duke students representing Union 7th grade, earned the State Chess first place Championship Trophy at the state grade level tournament. Nathan Luo, Andy Xiao and Zane Roy competed in 5 rounds to claim the highest state recognition in chess and the coveted gold cup.
Last year, the highest finish this team achieved in any tournament was 2nd place, so the boys are especially proud. The team wants to share credit with their chess coach Bill Snyder, who has been teaching the free weekly after school Chessmate program at the 6th/7th Grade Center since last year. An expert chess player himself, Snyder graciously donates his time each week, giving lessons to Union students at Clark Elementary and now the 6th/th7 Grade Center also.
