  • Good luck, Repertory Theater

    October 26, 2010
Thursday, October 28, we will host the State One Act Play contest in our PAC.  The day-long contest features several of the state's top schools as they via for the title of state champion.  On Thursday, October 14, we hosted the Regional OAP contest and our own Repertory Theater took first place with their play, The Insanity of Mary Girard.  The 10-member All-Star Cast that was named at the Regional Competition included six cast members from Union: Ashley Corral, Emily Elkins, Cody McCoy, Nathan Robertson, Mariah Shaw, and Allison Ward. Big congratulations to Allison Ward who placed first on the All-Star Cast. Good luck Repertory Theater!

Letter to the Tulsa World Editor: Bravo

    By Charles R. Cobb, Tulsa
(Rprinted with Permission. This is not an endorsement.)

I want to thank the Tulsa World for the story about the 5th-graders from Rosa Parks Elementary School attending Tulsa Opera's "La Traviata" ("5th-graders have night at the opera," Oct. 16). My girlfriend and I attended the Friday evening performance and had the privilege of sitting behind this wonderful group of students. They were attentive and extremely well-behaved.

During intermissions music teacher Charles Johnston talked with them. It is clear that Rosa Parks Elementary has a dedicated music teacher who is willing to go above and beyond the call of duty to bring the richness of music to his students.

In this season when football seems to be the biggest Friday night activity, it truly was a different kind of Friday Night Lights to witness these students and their teacher enjoy a masterpiece. I can only hope there are many more opportunities for the arts to be experienced by students so they may not only learn the required subjects but also grow their beings and souls from exposure to the richness of the arts in all of their forms. A hats off and "Bravo!" to Johnston, Union Schools and all who made the evening possible for these children.

  • Close calls are a rarity for Union

    October 25, 2010
A FEW MINUTES after Union finished off a 36-35 comeback win over visiting Bartlesville on Thursday night, victorious coach Kirk Fridrich was congratulated on the field by former Union coach Bill Blankenship.

Fridrich, who was once an assistant under Blankenship, asked his former boss if he had ever similarly won any games at Union as the Redskins had just experienced. Blankenship, who coached there from 1992-2005, responded, "A few."

But during Union's 90-game district winning streak, there had never been a game comparable to the rally from a 22-point deficit against Bartlesville. Union had rarely been challenged by a district opponent since losing at Muskogee 25-13 on Halloween in 1997.
