Union principal selected for national professional development training
Union High School Principal Lisa Witcher has been selected for training for the professional development program MAX Teaching with Reading and Writing. Witcher was invited to a national training session by Dr. Mark Forget, a nationally recognized educator with the program, after he visited Union Public Schools for local training.
“To be recognized by this outstanding presenter in a short training opportunity shows what a superstar Lisa Witcher is,” said Dr. Kathy Dodd, Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning. “It is wonderful that she has been asked to join the national staff and I think it will be a great opportunity for her and a great benefit to our district. I know that Witcher will bring everything she learned back to our district to help our staff implement best practices on a daily basis.”
Forget visited Union recently to work with core secondary teachers. Forget has taught at the elementary, middle and high school levels. He has taught a variety of math, science, history, and physical ed courses. He has also taught both undergraduate and graduate courses in reading instruction at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. Forget serves as the president and director of staff development for MAX Teaching with Reading and Writing.
Max Teaching with Reading and Writing is a teacher's manual with step-by-step descriptions of literacy-based classroom activities to engage students in active learning in any content area. The program shows teachers how to increase student engagement in any academic or vocational classroom; creates opportunities for all students to practice higher order thinking on a routine basis in every class; and involves teachers in classroom strategies that can lead to higher reading scores.
After working with Witcher during his recent visit, Forget invited her to national training. He wrote to Witcher, “It is clear that your grasp of the concepts and theory is beyond excellent from the ideas you shared with us all the workshop. Credibility in front of teachers is critical, and you have that. Even more, you also have that chance to set yourself up as a practitioner of MAX Teaching through modeling in some of the classrooms at your school.”
