With the help of volunteers from the Church at BattleCreek, Briarglen Elementary School, 3303 S. 121st E. Ave., received a makeover last weekend as crews descended on the school for an extensive remodeling Thursday, May 17, through Saturday, May 19 through its Clean Slate Project.
Below are two videos, created by the Church, about the remodeling program and the "reveal" that happened over the weekend. Warning: you may need some tissues.
Volunteers begin working on the renovations Thursday, May 17, and worked day and night, culminating in a big “reveal” to teachers and families of the school Saturday evening, shortly after 5 p.m. Teachers, students and families tour the school, and many shed tears of joy as you can see from the video above.
“For the Church at BattleCreek & Midtown, Clean Slate is an annual project that mobilizes thousands of volunteers with a goal to make a tremendous impact on our local community,” associate pastor Chris Campbell said. “This year we are focusing our efforts on transforming Union’s Briarglen Elementary and New Beginnings Community Church in downtown Tulsa." “We want to say thank you to Church at BattleCreek,” Principal Tamra Bird said. “This means so much to us and our students.”
Improvements to the school focused on the teachers’ lounge, media center, nurse’s office and a community room and included new carpet or wood-laminated floors, new paint, new shelving and cabinets, and new appliances, including a new refrigerator, dishwasher and microwaves for the teachers’ lounge.
Last year, more than 1,000 volunteers and 60 local businesses came together to transform four homes and two Tulsa Public schools. For the past four years, Clean Slate has helped transform more than 21 homes all across the Tulsa metro area, Campbell said. Sponsors for the Clean Slate project include Rausch Coleman Homes, Big Splash, Owasso Fence, Metro Appliances & More, and dozens of other corporate and private sponsors, Campbell said.
