MUSKOGEE - Union coach Lindsay Jones was quizzed about whether anything interesting happened during the opening round of the Class 6A girls state golf tournament.
She couldn't, at least on the spur of the moment, think of anything. Wednesday was simply business as usual for the Redskins - and that means business is very good.
Only 11 players shot in the 70s during a windy day at Muskogee Country Club, and five of them happened to be from Union.
The defending state champion Redskins jettisoned a top-10 individual score in posting a team total of 303 and they will take a 14-shot cushion into Thursday's final round.
"I'm pretty happy with where we are right now," Jones said.
"Some of the girls got off to kind of a rough start. They fought hard today just to kind of stay in it. I told them that this is more of a marathon as opposed to a sprint with this being our only two-day event."
Edmond North is the closest pursuer. Jenks and Broken Arrow are 24 and 25 shots off the pace, respectively. Broken Arrow played shorthanded because a wrist injury forced Brinlee Denison to withdraw in the midst of her round.
Union has placed first in 16 consecutive tournaments dating to last season. The Redskins won the first girls state golf championship in school history with a four-underclassman lineup in 2011.
Sophomores Emma Allen (the defending state runner-up) and Anna Kim shot 4-over-par 75s to launch Union toward a possible repeat. Junior Nadia Majidi bounced back from a tough start - Jones said Majidi was 4-over after four holes - to record a 76. Sophomore Marla Souvannasing and senior Erica Carangalan shot 77 and 78, respectively.
Two Edmond North players, Maddie Luitwieler and Allison Sell, shot 73s to tie for the individual lead.
Said Luitwieler, a freshman who made her state tournament debut, "I was a little nervous when I first started. I started off with a double, but I just kept positive and had fun with my teammates and we pulled it off."
Sell is a junior who tied for fifth at the state tournament last year. She said she hopes to finish in the top five again and said she is happy with her opening-round score.
"I could have done a little better," Sell said. "But I will take it."
And, of course, Union will gladly take the role of being in the driver's seat.
"We just have to play our game," Jones said. "We don't have to do anything special. If we just go out and play the way we have been playing, I think we will be fine."
Jenks' Kylie Staggs recorded a hole-in-one during a practice round at Muskogee Country Club on the eve of the tournament.
