Union Public Schools officials expect a smooth transition when the district changes athletic directors on June 1.
On Monday, the Union Board of Education approved current athletic director Chuck Perry's promotion to director of secondary education. Perry's successor as athletic director will be Emily Stone, who has been an assistant AD since 2004.
Perry has been athletic director since 2008. Stone will be the district's first woman athletic director.
"Both Chuck and Emily are quality people," said Kirt Hartzler, who is Union's associate superintendent for teaching and learning. "Chuck has done a terrific job as athletic director. He has made it a point to encourage coaches to pursue athletic excellence on the field while making academics a priority. It's been phenomenal the record number of championships we've won and the academic achievement by our athletes.
"I know Emily will pick up where Chuck has left off. Our coaches understand her and her style and she understands them. It should be a good transition."
Perry led Union to a state soccer title in 2005 before spending the next three years as assistant principal.
"I am very excited by new opportunity but I am going to miss the athletic side of things," Perry said. "The last four years have been incredible and we achieved all the things we set out to do. We have a great group of coaches who treat kids right. I expect a seamless transition. Emily will do a great job and the last nine years have prepared her well."
Stone, who is a University of Tulsa graduate, was a basketball and soccer captain at Union, where she graduated in 1996. She is a member of Union's athletic hall of fame and was a Union girls basketball assistant coach before becoming assistant AD.
"I am sad to be losing Chuck who has been a great boss and mentor," Stone said. "But I am very excited to step in the role he's been in and thankful that people think I am the right person for the job.
"I know the expectations here. I know the district well and we have great coaches in place. I'm looking forward to working at the next level and I couldn't be happier that I'm doing it at the school where I graduated."
