Troy Powell is a 'Great teacher'

Letter to the Editor: Great teacher

We recently had the pleasure of being at the Union High School’s performance of “Hamlet."

Troy Powell, teacher and drama coach, thanked the parents for the privilege and opportunity to work with their children. He praised the students’ creativity and dedication to the drama program. He complimented their perseverance for staying with the program.

He praised the parents for the quality of character exhibited by their young people.

Powell told the seniors that was their last play. He complimented their skills and the talents they had developed to guide them in real life. You can be anything you want to be. You can be as big as you want to be, he said.

He told the parents to stay with them.

He concluded by saying their children always would need their guidance and love.

Powell shares the thrill of his students’ success. He honored the alumni who were present.

For those who say that public school teachers work only for a paycheck, they haven’t met Powell. They haven’t met the millions of other teachers like Powell who love the students equally, and put in unpaid hours. They plan curriculum, grade papers and attend events in which their students’ participate; they educate our current citizens, who are productive adults and leaders.

In honor of Powell and his colleagues, let’s stop the public-school-teacher bashing. In our view, it really demeans those proffering such opinions.
