Union wins first in state for One-Act Play contest
The Union High School Repertory Theatre won first place in the state for the OSSAA One-Act state competition– the second time in four years - with its performance of The Insanity of Mary Girard. The contest was held at Union on October 28.Four Union students were named All-State cast members: Emily Elkins, Nathan Robertson, Mariah Shaw, and Allison Ward. Only 30 are granted in the state. Union also won Best Tech.
“The cast worked very hard on this production and I am very proud of them and their achievement,” said Troy Powell, drama instructor.
The state win follows the cast's regional win on October 14. The 10-member All-Star Cast that was named at the Regional Competition included six cast members from Union: Ashley Corral, Emily Elkins, Cody McCoy, Nathan Robertson, Mariah Shaw, and Allison Ward. Big congratulations to Allison Ward who placed first on the All-Star Cast.
Based on the true story of one of the richest and most powerful men in 18th century America and his young wife, The Insanity of Mary Girard provides a chilling glimpse into a time when husbands held absolute power over their wives, a medieval system was used to treat the mentally ill, and wealth and power could be abused in terrifying and almost unimaginable ways. This innovative and highly dramatic portrayal of a perfectly sane woman cast into a mental institution for the rest of her life will leave you speechless and spellbound.
