Union Public Schools is inviting the public for a grand opening of the new Central Park at Union with a community picnic from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, September 26. The park is located at 61st and Mingo, just south of the Union 6th/7th Grade Center.
The new park features new ball fields, walking and running tracks and other features.
Union will be serving dinner from Backyard Burgers for $6 per person; the funds will be donated to the Tulsa Area United Way.
Superintendent Dr. Cathy Burden said, “There will be music, games and fun for the whole family, plus it’s a great place to stop as you head to the Homecoming Game at Tuttle Stadium.”
Tickets may be purchased at Central Park at Union or in advance at the Education Service Center, 8501 E. 61st Street. For more information on tickets, contact Jan Shanahan at 357-6010.
Voters approved the construction of the new park as part of two different bond issues. The first phase included a JV/Intramural style football field, space for soccer and baseball, a concession stand, restrooms, a play area for younger children and a track that circles the property for anyone interested in jogging or running. The second phase, which began in the summer of 2008, is under way and will include other improvements such as an outdoor classroom, additional running track, baseball backstops, and will utilize the existing basketball courts.
