All Tulsa-area candidates for the state Legislature have been invited to attend a candidate forum on education.

Sponsored by 49th is Not OK and Tulsa Area Parent Legislative Action Committee, the forum is set for 6 p.m. Tuesday at Rogers Early College Junior High and High School.

During the first hour, each candidate will be asked to answer a few questions specific to public education, while the second hour has been reserved for attendees to personally interact with candidates to get any other questions answered.

Marlow Perkins Sipes, co-founder of 49th is Not OK, said voters and other interested residents deserve an opportunity to hear firsthand from their candidates about public education concerns.

"Election Day is approaching and it is time for citizens to be educated when they go to cast their ballot," Sipes said "The only way we can make a difference at the Capitol when it comes to public education is to elect those who represent the priorities of their constituents. That priority is education."

The most recent Oklahoma Poll conducted by soonerpoll.com found that almost two-thirds of Oklahomans say they are concerned about the funding of their local public schools and more than nine out of 10 said they would take school funding into consideration when casting ballots in this fall's legislative races.

49th is Not OK is a grass-roots, nonpartisan organization that was founded in April by parents concerned about budget cuts in their children's schools.

Tulsa Area Parent Legislative Action Committee is also a nonpartisan group. Its goal is increasing parent and community awareness about legislative issues impacting public education in Oklahoma.
