Every so often in our lives, a moment comes when something happens and from that point forward there will be a new before, and a new after. This is one of those moments. From this year forward, people will talk about ‘After Dr. Burden was Superintendent’ or ‘Before Dr. Hartzler became Superintendent’. This type of change can have a considerable impact on our collective psyche. To the fearful, such a change may seem to mean that we have lost our leader and thus we are liable to lose our way. But such is not the case today. We have lost neither leadership, nor our way.
And that fact is a testament to the type of leadership which Dr. Cathy Burden has provided Union over the last 18 years. She has led Union into developing a culture of leadership - so that we have not had one leader but many. Cathy has led the way in helping to create an environment at Union where teams of leaders are constantly developing in every facet of Union life. We have leaders in our classrooms, in locker rooms, in principal’s offices, leaders in our libraries, in bus barns, in our kitchens, and even some leaders at the Education Service Center. Union has not lost its leader because all of you are its leaders, and that is Cathy’s legacy to Union.
The legacy of Cathy Burden is a legacy of expectation and empowerment. She has helped establish a culture of high expectations for every Union employee, student, parent, and patron. And she has helped establish an environment of empowerment, which enables leadership at all levels and in all locations to grow and prosper. In so doing, her leadership has given Union strong roots; this change of Superintendents that will be occurring at the end of this school year will build upon those roots, giving us branches, letting us stretch and grow and reach new heights.
So to commemorate this moment when something is happening at Union that will define a new before and after, the Union Board of Education is proud to announce that the brand new Union Collegiate Academy College and Career Center shall be known as the Catherine E. Burden College and Career Center. And will serve to remind us of the legacy of expectation and empowerment that Cathy has given to every Union student through her leadership.
