Welcome back to school

Originally posted August 16, 2012

Dear Students and Parents,

Cathy BurdenWelcome back to school!  This year brings many beneficial changes,   particularly at the secondary level.  Ninth graders will have their own building--the former I-High, repurposed to fit their specific needs.

Amazing new opportunities are now available for 10-12th graders with the opening of the Union Collegiate Academy wing at the High School.  Concurrent college classes from TCC instructors will be offered to juniors and seniors; new science courses and labs will be outfitted for research and study; and Advanced Placement programs---all offer students college-level stimulation.

Union Virtual Learning Academy teachers will offer courses using technology that can be accessed while at school or at home.  An expanded College and Career Center will help students plan for their futures, and outreach specialists will begin working with students in 7th grade to help them plan appropriately for high school graduation and college.

A wide variety of new and healthy food service options will be available for High School students to enjoy on campus.  With more than 3,000 students on campus this year, we anticipate a lively environment at the high school filled with Redskin spirit.

An Open House to showcase the remodeled High School and Union Collegiate Academy wing will be the afternoon of September 23, and everyone is invited!

Plans for a fantastic year include Redskin athletics, the all-school musical Cats, construction on the new fine arts wing at the 6/7th Grade Center, and a new district tennis facility at the 9th Grade Center.  Union’s new giant video board will be installed by football season,ßßßßßßß and new parking lot exits will also be ready.

Elementary, middle and high school teachers and administrators are eager to welcome new students as well as returning ones.  We are anxious to involve parents, build relationships, and optimize learning opportunities for all Union students.  So welcome back, and we hope that you take full advantage of all that Union has to offer!

Sincerely,
Superintendent Dr. Cathy Burden
