Union Collegiate Academy Opens for 2012-2013 School Year
Are you bracing for an exciting new school year? You should! There are some sweeping changes in store this year as Union unveils its new Collegiate Academy wing at the High School and welcomes the influx of nearly 1,000 sophomore students onto its campus.
The new wing will feature more classrooms to handle the additional numbers, specially-equipped science rooms including an outdoor lab, large college-oriented lecture rooms, several new eating and studying locations, a college and career center, and an alumni center. In keeping with changes begun last year, the High School will be led by three principals. Principals will follow the same class of students during their duration at the High School. Next year, Lisa Witcher will begin mentoring the Class of 2016.
Union will celebrate the new wing with a special dedication on Sunday, September 23. Stay tuned for further announcements.Meanwhile, the former Intermediate High School will open as a 9th Grade Center as Principal John Federline and his team welcome freshmen. Car and bus traffic will be redirected around the 6th/7th Grade Center as it undergoes expansion of the fine arts section on the west front.
School hours also have been adjusted for many schools by a few minutes. Darnaby and Grove will switch schedules and the schedule for Cedar Ridge, Jarman, Jefferson and Moore will remain unchanged. School hours are posted on the front page at www.unionps.org.
