Flags fly high over new UCA

To celebrate the first time flags fly over the new Union Collegiate Academy wing at the High School, 6636 S. Mingo Road, Union Public Schools hosted a Flag Raising Ceremony at 9 a.m. Monday, August 6.
The ceremony featured the Union Renegade Regiment Drum Corps and Union’s Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps in a ceremony in front of the High School. Superintendent Dr. Cathy Burden talked about the new wing and Union’s emphasis on college and career readiness.
The UCA, construction for which began in early 2010, is now complete and will welcome the district’s 10th through 12th graders when school starts August 20. Its three floors, equipped with new classrooms, labs, lecture halls, cafes, an alumnae center, meeting spaces, and a college and career center, adds 125,000 square feet, and totally changes the look of the Union High School campus.
“The building is modeled after what students will see in college,” says Lee Snodgrass, executive director of project management. It is in this wing students in concurrent enrollment classes with Tulsa Community College will earn college credit while completing high school requirements and have the opportunity to take virtual learning classes. Virtual, or on-line classes, allow students to work independently with the assistance of teachers as needed.
The Union Collegiate Academy open house for the public is scheduled Sunday, September 23.
