Union girls golf team caps perfect season with second straight 6A state title

MUSKOGEE - Happy birthday, Erica Carangalan.

Union's lone senior celebrated her 18th birthday on the same day that she and her teammates celebrated a second consecutive Class 6A girls state golf championship. The Redskins fired consecutive rounds of 303 and won by 25 shots over runner-up Edmond North.

After Wednesday's opening round at Muskogee Country Club, Carangalan and her pals joked that her family had planned really well many years ago to allow Carangalan to simultaneously play for a state title and turn 18 on the same day.

Everything seemed to go according to plan for Union each of the last two springs. The Redskins have won 17 tournaments in a row dating to last season. All five Redskins were among the top 12 placers at the 2012 state tournament. They were supposed to win, and they did.

"We had a perfect season," Carangalan said. "The pressure to win this was kind of heavy, but not really because if you have one person carrying the weight, it's hard. But if you have five people, it's a breeze because I know I can depend on my team."

Edmond North junior Allison Sell became the first person from her school ever to win medalist honors at the state tournament, turning in rounds of 73-74 for a two-shot margin over Union sophomores Emma Allen and Anna Kim.

"Yesterday I was striking the ball really well, but my short game was killing me," Sell said after the final round. "Today it was the complete opposite. My chipping was saving me all day."

Sell said she needed only 11 putts over the final nine holes.

Muskogee's Catrina Pearson staged a clinic on how to finish a career. Only one player in the field broke par during either round and she did it with a 1-under par 70 at her home course Thursday. That allowed her to salvage fourth place before heading to Grand Canyon University in Arizona. You could tell by the tears on Pearson's face that the farewell round meant something to her.

"I'm a senior," she said. "I'm graduating."

Union junior Nadia Majidi placed fifth. Carangalan and Jenks' Mackenzie Medders tied for 10th and Union sophomore Marla Souvannasing was one shot behind them.

Union had never won a state championship in girls golf before last year. Coach Lindsay Jones said returning players immediately committed to trying to win another title. She said they accomplished the feat because they are "fighters."

"They grind it out," Jones said. "It's not always going to be pretty golf when you watch us, but somehow or another they manage to get it in the hole."

Translated, the Redskins don't hit every fairway and green.

"What she means is we always have shots that are way out of left field," Carangalan said. "Like, I will hit them in the trees and I will hit out of the trees into the bunker and hit up and make the putt. It's a par. It may not have been pretty. But it's still a par, right?"

After the trophy presentation, Carangalan said she and her teammates were headed to Chili's to celebrate the big day. She wanted a state championship for her birthday and got it, but expressed one regret. She said she wishes her grandmother ("my biggest supporter") was around to share the experience. Carangalan said her grandmother died following Christmas in 2010.

The Redskins, after sending their only senior out on top, will try for three in a row in 2013.
