Union Public Schools will host A Taste of Union, in which the public will have a chance to try food from various sponsors and vendors, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Friday, September 23, at the UMAC, 6836 S. Union. The event, which was first held last year, will be a fundraiser for the Tulsa Area United Way.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for children 12 and under.

Kristin Shelby, a fourth-grade teacher at Sallie Gillentine Elementary School in Hollis Public Schools, was named the 2012 Teacher of the Year by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Janet Barresi during a ceremony Tuesday, September 20, at the Oklahoma State Fair.

A George Kaiser Family Foundation representative talks to State Rep. Dan Kirby (R-Tulsa) on Friday September 16, about the merits of the Rosa Parks Early Childhood Center and how the school helps prevent poverty by providing stability and education resources for low-income children at an early age. Kirby also toured the 8th Grade Center today, Tuesday, September 21.

Students and staff - and Blue Bell Ice Cream - gave Union Public Schools 2011 Teacher of the Year Dawn Poyndexter a big send-off this afternoon, September 19. Poyndexter will be in Oklahoma City at the Oklahoma State Fair on Tuesday, September 20, when the State Department of Education recognizes the top-12 state finalists for Teacher of the Year and reveals the winner.

As Tulsa-area students get back into the school routine, district leaders have been scrambling to ease overcrowded classes by moving teachers around and combining classes.
